"I just wanted to touch base and tell you how much I enjoy reflecting on the weekend last year and how much I took away from it. Often when I am practicing I smile when I "see" you or Debbie driving home a point."--Sandy Nickerson, May 5, 2004
It was a nice mix of playing and learning, as well as time off to relax, go into town etc. I especially enjoyed the session on the porch in the afternoon. It's good to get together with others to learn, ask questions, and hear stories.
I
really liked the setting, it was great being right up the street from the
ocean. It was nice to take some time to walk along the beach and clear
your head after a busy Saturday morning.
I
had a wonderful time! I liked the
I loved the "front porch" chat regarding experiences while performing - I'm still chuckling about Debbie's nude beach experience.
I found the entire weekend so encouraging, and enjoyed the sessions as well as making some wonderful "harp" friends. It was a terrific learning experience for me personally - very rewarding. Also, the good news is that I live only 10 hours away, a much shorter drive than we originally anticipated…
I love this workshop and don't know how you do it--but it seems to be better each year!! Count me in next year!
I could participate on songs I didn't actuallly know because I could apply the few little accompaniment techns. you taught on the bass in the morning breakout session. I really needed that boost.
Fabulous location - no pressure from the instructors - friendly people
- it was a great weekend leaving me with the incentive to keep on trying
- And next year two hands for the performance!!!
I feel I accomplished a lot in one day - I can play the air and the A part of
the jig by ear. You are a terrific and inspiring teacher.
Words can’t even begin to describe the wonderful experience it was coming to Harpers Escape. I’m still in heaven! And I’m so excited to find that -- as you promised us – I really can remember how to play the beautiful songs we learned! (well, okay, I’ve been practicing…..) Thank you so much for organizing the whole thing. Wow!
In answer to our feedback survey "What did you like or not like about the setting?" we got this response: " What's not to like?!?!?! Beach, sand, water, harps....bliss!" And then this one: "I loved being by the beach." So the location was obviously a plus for the attendees.
"I thought Debbie was very patient and kind and found her an inspiring teacher."
"Thank you so much- it was a wonderful weekend in every way- I loved the people, the teachers, and the learning experience. Thanks for all your efforts. Having the CD to listen to the songs was a great idea. It helped me learn them much more quickly."
On the concert: "It was fun playing with everyone; it was inspiring to hear teachers playing individually & together. It was also good to be able to participate by accompanying and in singing the chorus to The Water is Wide--beyond the two tunes we had learned."
"Kathy, Thank you for the happy, inspiring, well-planned weekend! I was pleased with EVERYTHING and am challenged to keep on practicing! You kept the pace relaxed and fun while providing valuable learning experiences for all of us. I appreciate all the time and effort that made our weekend what it was!!"
"I think this was probably one of the best workshops I have ever attended and will definitely be back next year."
"I loved being so close to the beach, food was great.
"My favorite time was Saturday night when everybody played what they had learned and they played together. It was inspiring and it boosted by confidence."
"Grainne showed such patience with us all. It was a treat to take a workshop with her."
"I had a great time! It was wonderful seeing friends again -- and oh yeah -- lots of harps!!!"
"I appreciated the teaching tape so that I could familiarize myself with the tunes. I also thought that the information provided in advance as to parking, dining, etc. was helpful. Obviously a lot of thought went into the weekend and I really appreciated Kathy and Debbie's hard work in organizing it."
"What a nice group of people! A greay way to see the various skills, interests and types of harps out there. Lots of support for those of us struggling, so even though I didn't benefit from all of the instruction, I thoroughly enjoyed it."
"It was an overall inspiring weekend."
"Just what I needed. I think the angels brought me here."
Dear Kathy,
So sorry I couldn't be with you this year. I know it was a lot of fun for all! Actually I played a wedding for the first time on Friday night--prelude and lighting of the Unity Candle. I *know* I wouldn't be doing what I am doing if you hadn't insisted that I perform a solo at the first Harpers Escape I attended!
And. . . I'm going to be interviewed and photographed on Thursday for a story for our Diocesan newspaper because I harp every week for the bedbound patients at the VA hospital, and for a Mass in the hospital chapel.
When I thank God for this ministry He has led to into, I thank Him for using you and Debbie to launch me on this path. :-)
Peace and Harmony,
Ruth
"It was a joy to meet so many people who share my love of the instrument and to check out so many different harp models, designs and voices. I appreciate the advice you gave me...thanks again for a fun and exhilarating experience."
"My overall playing improved noticeably; I play louder and with more confidence.."
"I never thought I could possibly learn so much and grow so much in such a short time. Something happened inside me, and I began to think of my playing in a new way. I have more confidence in where I can go with it, and a new resolve to work at it..." from a letter sent by a 1998 weekend attendee.
Hello Kathy,
Just a brief note to say thanks
for a great weekend! Having never met you before, I was not sure what I was in
for having signed up to attend, and I must tell you both Tom and I had a
WONDERFUL time! I really like your teaching style. I must tell you I was
a bit surprised to see you teach PLACING the way you do, and I like the
non-threatening way you run a class. Both you and Debbie are doing a great job
and I'm so glad I was able to be a part of it.
You asked for suggestions for improvements. I don't think it could have been any better. By the end of Saturday's afternoon session, I was suffering from a bit of brain-drain, but the evening session with "Summertime" and "The Broom" was such a high and so much fun. I really enjoyed doing a bit of fiddle with you as well. As I told you, it had been quite some time since I had been able to play "Da Slockit Light" with anyone.
SO, again I thank both of you. It's a wonderful event at a lovely location; the food was excellent and I'm sure you personally ordered the perfect weather.
Lee (I'm STILL recovering from my Escape Weekend high) Gayman
Hi Debbie,
Just wanted to tell you again what a great time I had at the escape! The pace, for me at least, was just fine. I showed Ellen Tepper, my teacher, what I'd learned and she was very pleased. We're now working to add the bass hand and slowly bring them up to tempo. The Scottish tips you gave also really helped me with cello ornamentations. It put me on the right track! Thanks again!
