Standards for Excellence

Why it’s important:

The Standards for Excellence Institution is a national initiative established to promote the highest standards of ethics, effectiveness, and accountability in nonprofit governance, management, and operations, and to help all nonprofit organizations meet these high benchmarks.

Why it’s important to us:

“As a non-profit that is nearly fully funded with public tax dollars, it is essential for HSLC to aspire to the highest levels
of accountability, to assure transparency in our operations, and to instill confidence in our capabilities.”
– Maryam Phillips, HSLC Executive Director

At HSLC we believe strong libraries make strong communities.  We are driven by our mission to contribute to the success of libraries by delivering sound technical solutions and expansive consulting services.

As a nonprofit, we understand your mission and the unique challenges libraries face.  Our team of library and technology professionals works to strengthen your library using proven evaluation and assessment methods and cutting-edge technology solutions, along with recommendations based on current national trends and best practices.

HSLC commits to our core values across role boundaries within the company, ensuring that the Board and Staff are aligned in how we carry out our mission.  We strive at all times to be Inclusive, Trustworthy, Dedicated, and always Listening to those we serve.

HSLC demonstrates legal compliance at all levels: local, state and federal, to ensure our Company, Board and Staff are protected.  Our Business Integrity policy is located here.

HSLC operates at the highest standards of ethics and transparency in financial reporting,
which promotes confidence in our ability to serve as a trusted partner in administering publicly funded grants.

Although HSLC does not fundraise in the way many non-profit
organizations do, we stand ready to assist those in need of guidance or assistance in this area.

HSLC values library staff and seeks to instill the value of librarianship in our society.  Librarians play a key role in guiding citizens toward accurate and trustworthy information, ensuring the best resources are used to fulfill any information need.  Toward that end, HSLC sponsors a variety of associations that support this goal.
